Guidelines

Herbal medicinal products in clinical guidelines

Clinical guidelines are of great importance: they represent the current state of science and help to integrate research results into practical work. They find their way into textbooks and curricula and set clinical standards. Clinical guidelines are usually developed by medical societies in compliance with the rules of evidence-based medicine.

The AWMF’s guideline work

Since 1995, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Wissenschaftlicher Medizinischer Fachgesellschaften (Association of Scientific Medical Societies, AWMF) has been coordinating the development of clinical guidelines for diagnostics and therapy and advises on fundamental and interdisciplinary matters and tasks, develops recommendations and resolutions and represents them to institutions, especially in the political sphere.

The GPT’s guideline work

The German Gesellschaft für Phytotherapie (Society for Phytotherapy, GPT) is a member of the AWMF. Thanks to the GPT’s preparatory work, herbal medicinal products have now found their way into at least 20 AWMF clinical guidelines. The aim of the GPT’s guideline officers is to provide prospective support for the update process, which takes place every five years, to ensure that medicinal plants are taken into account and used in everyday therapeutic practice. The GPT provides information on current aspects of the clinical guideline work several times a year with a newsletter.
